Building for Good: Introducing Article 25, WAF's Charity Partner
For the second year running, Article 25 is World Architecture Festival's official charity partner - and WAF is delighted to bring their work to our global community as we build up to Fort Lauderdale this November.
For those who haven't come across them yet: Article 25 is the UK's leading humanitarian architecture NGO. For over 20 years, they have worked with governments, NGOs and communities around the world to design and deliver hospitals, schools and homes for people who need them most - in some of the toughest, most climate-stressed environments on the planet. From earthquake-resilient hospitals in Nepal to RIBA award-winning, passive-cooled schools in the Sahel, their work sits at the intersection of humanitarian need and architectural excellence - proof that good design can, and should, reach everyone.
Here's a snapshot of what their teams have been working on this month:
Kenya : Article 25 has shared a project it has been quietly developing for two years - the first government-run paediatric eye care centre in East Africa. Working with CBM at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi, the team has moved into concept design for a facility that could transform access to sight-saving care for children across Kenya and beyond, in a country where over 80% of blindness is preventable or curable.
Laos : A landmark moment for Khammouane Provincial Hospital in Thakhek. After a year of close collaboration with LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency, and hospital staff, Article 25 has completed a phased masterplan to transform a fragmented, century-old campus - with Phase 1, a new Acute Care Building designed for Laos' tropical climate, now moving into full design ahead of construction targeted for late 2026.
Award-winning design : Article 25's Kao La Amani Children's Village in Boma Ng'ombe, Tanzania has won an AIA UK 2026 Citation in Urban Design & Environmental Stewardship. Home to 60 orphaned children, the fully off-grid settlement combines timbrel vaults and locally sourced sisal cladding with solar power and rainwater harvesting - judges praised its place-based, self-sufficient design.
More Than a Building : Beyond its project work, Article 25 runs More Than a Building - a membership network connecting developers, engineers, project managers and contractors with senior leaders shaping the future of the built environment. This summer's calendar included one of the standout industry gatherings of the season, bringing together over 200 senior leaders from across construction at Kensington Palace.
This is just the beginning. As WAF's charity partner, we'll be sharing more of Article 25's project updates, events and stories in this newsletter each month, right through to the festival in November. If their work resonates, there's a simple way to be part of it.
