13&9 Design

Anastasija Lesjak is the head of the product design studio 13&9 Design, based in Graz, Austria. Her work focuses on the development of research-driven design solutions in collaboration with designers, scientists, academic institutions, and industry partners, with the aim of supporting health and well-being in the built environment. Drawing on her interdisciplinary background, she operates at the intersection of scientific research and applied design practice, fostering cross-disciplinary processes that inform innovative concepts across workplace, educational, hospitality, public, and healthcare contexts. Since 2013, the studio has realized a wide range of projects spanning furniture, lighting, acoustics, textiles, accessories, as well as exhibition and sound design. A central focus of her research concerns perceptual processes and the impact of specific natural patterns, particularly in environments with limited or no access to nature. This line of inquiry led to an ongoing collaboration with Professor Richard Taylor (University of Oregon; Fractals Research, USA), a leading physicist in the field. In 2018, they co-founded ScienceDesignLab, an initiative dedicated to the development of scientifically informed fractal design applications for the built environment. Her work has been disseminated through several peer-reviewed publications, including Handbook of Neuroscience and the Built Environment (Routledge, 2025), The Fractal Geometry of the Brain (Advances in Neurobiology, 2024), and a special issue of Frontiers in Psychology (Environmental Psychology, 2021). In addition to her studio practice, Lesjak serves as a consultant to INNOCAD Architecture, contributing to internationally recognized, award-winning projects. These include the Quality Choice Prize 2025 (European Society for Quality Research, ESQR), the Best of Competition Award 2025 (International Interior Design Association, IIDA), and the “World Interior of the Year 2025” at the World Architecture Festival (WAF). Lesjak is an invited speaker at universities and international conferences. Her work has been acknowledged with several distinctions, including the title “Product Designer of the Year 2019” awarded by Interior Design Magazine (US), and her designation as one of 13 “Industry Visionaries” by Delve Magazine (US) in 2025.
