Elliott Wood

Andy’s engineering career has always been guided by exploration and curiosity. Over time, he has come to understand that engineering is not only about solving problems, but also about identifying better problems to solve. That process begins with paying close attention, asking thoughtful questions, and staying open to a wide range of perspectives. He has always been drawn to the early stages of design, when ideas are still taking shape. This is the point when things feel most uncertain and most full of potential. What continues to motivate him is the act of building and making. He cares deeply about how things are constructed and has always been interested in materials, methods, and the physical reality of design. Seeing ideas take shape on site is just as rewarding to him as early conceptual work. He is a frequent visitor to buildings, whether they are successful or not, and every visit offers something to learn. There is lasting value in understanding both achievements and missed opportunities. Beyond the design process, he is equally interested in the broader context in which engineering operates. This includes the economic drivers behind construction, the frameworks that manage risk, and the factors that determine why some projects proceed while others do not. These forces can be frustrating, but understanding them allows him to become a more effective contributor to the built environment. This broader awareness has helped shape his role at Elliott Wood. Andy contributed to the creation of ETHICS, the practice’s manifesto, and helped launch The Building Society, a shared workspace for people working to improve the built environment. Both initiatives were born from a desire to open up dialogue, challenge existing norms, and bring together a range of voices. Through this work, and through teaching in architectural and engineering schools, he has seen the value of engaging in conversations that extend beyond individual projects.
