Summer is upon us, bringing a fresh wave of opportunities for globally minded architects to participate in ambitious design competitions, writes Merlin Fulcher.
For those keen to land a major cultural commission, Pohang City in South Korea has launched a contest for a new £15.41 million (KRW 31,378 million) museum aiming to ‘preserve and promote the comprehensive history’ of the settlement.
The four-storey 7,640m² Pohang Museum complex will be constructed on a 15,142m² waterfront site. Registration is open until 20 July and the winner of the contest will receive a £790,000 (KRW 1,600 million) design fee.
For the civic minded, Buildner, in partnership with AIA Rochester has launched an ideas contest featuring a $10,000 prize fund for a new riverfront cultural and civic destination in New York.
Participants are invited to draw up concepts for a new contemporary market and public gathering space responding to the dramatic landscape of Rochester’s future High Falls State Park. Registrations must be completed by 10 December.
Also in the Big Apple where the cost of living crisis continues to bite, a request for proposals has been published calling on branding and design firms to develop a visual identity for a series of city-supported ‘NYC Groceries’ stores.
The winning team will work with the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Mamdani Administration to create a ‘vibrant, cohesive’ brand for the new shops which will provide lower cost groceries across the five boroughs. Applications must be completed by 30 June.
With city-dwellers worldwide keen to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, a new framework, backed by Bruxelles Environnement, is being launched to extend and strengthen the strategic vision for high-quality open spaces in and around Brussels.
The two-year framework is divided into two lots covering visions and masterplans, and studies from preliminary design to execution respectively. Five teams will be selected for each lot. Submissions are due by 26 June.
With the World Cup now showing on screens, the City of Zagreb has meanwhile granted extra time for applications to its single-stage contest for a €224 million redesign of the Maksimir Stadium.
Proposals for the future of the stadium – which is home of Dinamo Zagreb and main venue for the Croatian national football team – are now open until 17 July with models due by 28 July.
